The hotel at a glance.
Les Sources de Caudalie stands between forest and vine on the estate of Château Smith Haut Lafitte, a Graves Grand Cru Classé. Designed as a hamlet among the vines, overlooking duck ponds, it holds the Palace distinction, which the hotel presents as the only one in Bordeaux, and is home to what it calls the world's first Vinothérapie Spa. For guests weighing hotels around Martillac, it pairs a restaurant with two Michelin stars (as of 2026) with vineyard tours, woodland art and spring water drawn from 540 metres below ground.
Why it stands out
- A Vinothérapie Spa that the hotel calls the world's first, fed by a spring 540 metres deep
- La Grand'Vigne: two Michelin stars and four Gault & Millau toques, as of October 2026
- Set among the vineyards of Grand Cru Classé Château Smith Haut Lafitte
- A Palace that the hotel calls the first eco-labelled one, with three MICHELIN Keys (as of 2026)
- Forest bathing and a contemporary art trail themed on the five senses
A wine-country hamlet with salvaged cellar beams
Alice and Jérôme Tourbier opened Les Sources de Caudalie in 1999 as their first hotel venture, on the family-owned vineyards of Château Smith Haut Lafitte. It was conceived as a hamlet among the vines, drawing on the region's heritage and wine history, and the hotel says it combines the precision of a great Palace with the warmth of a family house. The hotel received the European Ecolabel in 2023 and says it is among the hotels holding Condé Nast Traveler's Triple Crown for winning the magazine's Hot List, Gold List and Readers' Choice Awards.
Accommodation is spread across six houses, each a regional variation: Le Village des Pêcheurs, La Grange au Bateau, La Maison du Lièvre, Le Comptoir des Indes, La Bastide des Grands Crus and L'Ile aux Oiseaux. Rooms carry evocative names, from Claret to Archipels, and mix carefully sourced antiques with timeless decor.
Part of the hotel was built with heavy beams salvaged from Château Lafite-Rothschild's cellars, and Pyrenean marble lines the bathrooms. The spa recalls an old tobacco-drying barn of south-west France, built entirely of red cedar, Douglas pine and Burgundy stone and filled with daylight.
In the rooms, amenities come in a reusable fabric pouch and shower products in refillable bottles of recycled and recyclable plastic.
Between the vines and the forest
The hotel sits on the Château Smith Haut Lafitte estate, in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, 200 metres from the château itself. Walks lead past the artworks of the Forest of the Senses, a contemporary art trail on the theme of the five senses, and guests can try forest bathing in the château's woods. A 250 m² organic permaculture vegetable garden, a chicken coop and a Bee Garden supply the kitchens with eggs, fruit, vegetables, edible flowers and herbs.
Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport and Bordeaux Saint-Jean TGV station are each about 20 minutes by car, and Cadaujac TER station less than 10. Bordeaux itself is about 20 kilometres away, Saint-Emilion about 45 and the Arcachon Bay about 60 to the west. There is a heliport on site, and electric vehicles can be rented during a stay.
Six houses, from forest rooms to stilted suites
Comfort Rooms measure 27 m² and sleep two, with 'Buco'Chic' decor, a forest or garden view and a separate bathroom with twin basins, a bath and a shower. Prestige Rooms, recently redecorated in mineral or earthy tones with fine woods and art pieces, offer 32 m² for two adults and a child, with the same outlook and bathroom. Junior Suites measure 45 m² for three, each on its own regional theme, from Espelette in the Basque Country to the Lys in the Valley, and all have a sitting area.
Prestige Suites measure 50 m² and sleep two adults and two children, with a balcony, whitewashed wood panelling and rattan and cane furnishings in the spirit of an Atlantic cabin. Signature Suites share the 50 m² and the family capacity but have a private terrace instead of a balcony; they sit apart from the others for privacy and look out over the white-grape vines of Château Smith Haut Lafitte.
L'Ile aux Oiseaux, a nod to the stilt huts of the Arcachon Basin, measures 61 m² for two, with a stilted terrace over the estate's natural basin; the couturier Rabih Kayrouz designed it as one light-filled living space where white sets off handcrafted Lebanese objects. Families of up to six can rent the Au Coeur des Sources apartment, which overlooks the lake and vineyards and has private access from the gardens. La Chartreuse du Château le Thil, an 18th-century residence 1.5 km away, offers rooms and suites in a centuries-old park.

Two Michelin stars and a rebuilt washhouse
The estate has three restaurants and a bar. La Grand'Vigne, led by Chef Nicolas Masse, held two Michelin stars and four Gault & Millau toques as of October 2026, and joined the World's Greatest Restaurants in 2024. It sits beneath a glass canopy inspired by eighteenth-century greenhouses, in a dining room of deep carbon tones. Vegetables come from the organic garden just outside, seafood from sustainable fisheries, and the menu holds a single meat dish in a carefully controlled portion; Head Sommelier Aurélien Farrouil oversees the wine list. Dinner is served from 19:30, Wednesday to Sunday, with lunch from 12:15 at weekends.
La Table du Lavoir, the estate's country inn, serves lunch from 12:00 and dinner from 19:00 every day, with hearty dishes of seasonal produce and heritage vegetables. A washhouse rebuilt stone by stone stands in the middle of the room, honouring the winemakers' wives who washed their linen there in the 19th century, beneath a timber frame of 18th-century wood from Lafite Rothschild's cellars. In summer the sheltered terrace faces Château Smith Haut Lafitte; in winter an old fireplace warms the room.
ROUGE, a gourmet grocery and wine bar, opens every day, with a summer terrace beside the estate's fountain; from October to May its counter hosts a tasting of three prestige wines, by reservation. The intimate French Paradox bar pours cocktails and aged Armagnacs, Cognacs and whiskies. Away from La Grand'Vigne, menus favour vegetarian dishes and responsibly sourced seafood. Breakfast is a buffet at La Grand'Vigne from 07:30 to 10:30, or a 'Vigneron' breakfast in bed from 07:00.
Vinotherapy fed by a deep hot spring
The Vinothérapie Spa draws on a natural spring 540 metres beneath the hotel, which also feeds the barrel bath, pools and jacuzzi. Treatments give access to the hammam, indoor jacuzzi, relaxation rooms and thermal bath, where the hot spring water is mixed with vine and grape extracts. The spa opens from 09:00 to 19:00 Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 19:00 on Monday and 09:00 to 13:00 on Sunday, and also welcomes non-residents.
The heated indoor pool, in a glasshouse with a vine-leaf artwork by Mathilde de L'Ecotais, is open year-round from 08:00 to 20:00 to hotel guests, children included; the heated outdoor pool, also for hotel guests, runs in season until October. The outdoor hot tub and the barrel-shaped sauna on the pool terrace are open year-round to hotel guests aged 16 and over, and the sauna can be booked privately outside peak hours. A gym with cardio machines opens from 08:00 to 20:00.
Cellars, kitchens, bicycles and the forest
Wine shapes the programme. Château Smith Haut Lafitte runs guided tours every day by appointment for groups of up to 10, from its 16th-century tower to cellars holding 1,000 barrels, ending with a tasting of the estate's first and second wines. On a few Saturdays each month, Head Sommelier Aurélien Farrouil hosts a 90-minute introduction to oenology for hotel guests in the Tasting Tower, and a champagne tasting is offered too. Mixology classes take place behind the French Paradox bar from Monday to Thursday at 15:30, by reservation, for up to four people.
On Saturday mornings from 10:00 to 13:00, Chef Nicolas Masse's team gives cooking classes in French, on a weekly theme, followed by a communal lunch at La Grand'Vigne. Yoga classes run every Saturday at 10:00, with private sessions on request through the week, and from April to October coach Julien leads free workouts on weekend mornings between 09:00 and 12:00.
Julien also leads a 1.5-hour bike ride from the hotel through the estates of Smith Haut Lafitte, Carbonnieux, Haut-Bailly and others, for one to eight riders, daily subject to availability. Walking and jogging routes lead from the door into the vineyard, and the tennis court, a few hundred metres away in the woods, can be booked from 08:00 to 20:00 with rackets and balls provided. From April to October, the hotel's own pinasse can be hired with skipper and fuel for excursions on the Arcachon Bay.
