Le Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa sits atop the Montagne de Reims in the village of Champillon, a few minutes from Épernay, with the vineyards of the great champagne houses at its feet. Once a 19th-century post-trading station where, according to the MICHELIN Guide, kings and Napoleon stopped, it opened as the present hotel in 2018 after a renovation that added a modernist wing, and every room and suite looks out over the valley with no building opposite.

Why it stands out

  • Valley and vineyard panoramas from a perch on the Montagne de Reims
  • Le Royal, listed with one Michelin star from the 2025 guide as of October 2026
  • Former 19th-century post-trading station on the coach line to Reims
  • A spa with indoor and outdoor pools, hammam, sauna and yoga studio
  • Private visits to Ruinart, Taittinger, Moët & Chandon and small family houses

A royal coaching stop with a modernist wing

The hotel began as a 19th-century post-trading station on the coach line between Paris and Reims, a stop where, the MICHELIN Guide says, kings and Napoleon broke their journeys. The architect Giovanni Pace, known for his work with Moët & Chandon, led its transformation, and after nearly four years of renovation it opened as the present hotel in 2018. The work added a modernist wing to the old coaching inn, so the hotel now spans that wing and the 19th-century Post House. It is family-owned and family-run.

The building rises over four levels on 300 concrete pillars, and local quartz stone and glass give it a modern look. The hotel describes its style as contemporary architecture meeting regional charm; the rooms are finished in natural materials, soft textures and clean lines, and all of them open through bay windows onto the vineyards, with no buildings facing them. The MICHELIN Guide gives the hotel Three MICHELIN Keys (as of 2026).

Above the vineyards of the Marne valley

Perched above historic vineyards on top of the Montagne de Reims, the hotel looks full-screen across the valley. Épernay, whose Avenue de Champagne is home to Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon and Perrier-Jouët, is a few minutes away, and its railway station lies 5 km from the hotel. Reims, 20 minutes away, has the cathedral where the kings of France were crowned and houses such as Taittinger and Veuve Clicquot.

By car, the hotel is about 1 hour 30 minutes from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, 150 km away, and 2 hours from central Paris. By train, it is 30 minutes from Charles de Gaulle Airport or 40 minutes from Paris Gare de l'Est, each followed by a 15-minute car transfer. Vatry-Châlons Airport is 52 km away, the concierge can arrange private transport, and a helipad on the site is reserved for hotel guests.

Junior suites, named suites and an Art Deco villa

The three Junior Suite categories each measure 44 m², bathed in natural light, in a revisited classic French style with a generous sofa, a writing desk and made-to-measure furniture. Each has a furnished 6 m² outdoor space and a large bathroom with bath, shower and a double vanity cut from travertine, a regional stone, plus Diptyque toiletries, a dressing area styled like a travel trunk and a safe. A coffee machine with fine teas, a sofa-and-armchair corner, a flat-screen TV with Chromecast, a steamer and a complimentary minibar of soft drinks, juices and water, refilled daily, complete them, and stays include access to the spa and its facilities.

The Junior Suite Garden and Junior Suite Champagne sit on the garden level, framing the entrance to the terrace, with views of the garden and of the vines rising behind it; both have a private terrace. The Junior Suite Champagne and Junior Suite Royal take two adults and, on request, a child, with a double bed or two singles. The Junior Suite Royal has a private balcony instead and an open, panoramic view of the Champagne hillsides.

Two named suites complete the range: Suite Marie-Louise looks out over the vineyards, while Suite Joséphine, named after the empress, has a panoramic view of the Marne valley.

Villa Les Trois Clochers, an Art Deco house built in 1924, sleeps up to ten adults. Its 251 m² hold five double suites of 20 to 43 m², each with its own bathroom, a 69 m² living room with lounge, bar, kitchen and dining area, and a 25 m² salon. Outside are a landscaped garden, a large terrace, a 60 m² round heated pool with a pool house at the foot of the vines, and a belvedere with an outdoor kitchen. Diptyque products, a coffee machine, a kettle and fine teas are provided.

A starred table and a glittering brasserie

The hotel has two restaurants, Le Royal and the bistronomic Le Bellevue, plus the Abysse bar. Le Royal opens in the historic part of the hotel, where a gold-patinated ceiling crowns a royal salon honouring the women in Napoleon's life. As of October 2026, the hotel lists it with one Michelin star from the 2025 Michelin Guide.

As of October 2026, the hotel names Christophe Raoux as executive chef: a Meilleur Ouvrier de France of 2015 and a disciple of Alain Ducasse from the Vendée, settling in Champagne for the first time. The hotel sums up his cooking as French cuisine built on the truth of the product and of taste. It also names Claire Santos Lopes as pastry chef, Grégory Charlier as the head of the dining room and Philippe Marques as head sommelier.

Le Bellevue lives up to its name with a 180-degree panorama over Épernay and the Marne valley. A brasserie busy at all hours, it serves a menu of France's signature produce with touches from further afield, and after dark a thousand crystal pendants hanging from the ceiling light the room; the hotel likens them to luminous water droplets.

The Abysse Bar & Terrace, the hotel's address for cocktails, aperitifs and late drinks, opens daily from 11:00 to 00:30 without reservation, subject to availability.

The Royal Picnic takes the meal into the vines. Christophe Raoux composes a menu of local specialities such as an aperitif, artisan focaccia and regional cheeses, served with a favourite champagne or one chosen from the hotel's cellar, and a private butler sets it up at what the hotel calls one of the finest viewpoints in the Champagne valley.

A spa with indoor and outdoor pools

The spa has nine treatment rooms, an indoor and an outdoor pool, a hammam, a sauna, jacuzzis, a yoga studio and a fitness room. It opens daily from 10:00 to 20:00 for treatments and for the hammam, sauna and whirlpool bath; the pools are open from 08:00 to 20:00, and the fitness room can be used at any hour with the room key.

On request, the hotel organises sessions of pilates, yoga, cardio-boxing, qi gong, and strengthening and stretching, each led by a professional coach.

Cellars, balloons and boats on the Marne

The hotel's Guest Experience Makers arrange private visits to houses such as Ruinart, Taittinger and Moët & Chandon in Reims and Épernay, as well as to small family houses. Cellar visits trace the making of champagne, from pressing through riddling to disgorgement, in candlelit chalk cellars dug centuries ago, and can include meetings with growers and private tastings of rare vintages. Guests can also walk the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay, see the abbey of Dom Pérignon at Hautvillers or seek out small houses in Grand Cru villages, while vineyard walks from the hotel end with champagne tasted a few steps from where the grapes were picked.

Electric bikes leave from the hotel for neighbouring villages such as Hautvillers and the vineyards, and mountain bikers can take on demanding trails across the region. Guided horse rides cross forests and fields, hot-air balloons fly over the Montagne de Reims, and a historic boat cruises the Marne through what the hotel describes as landscapes listed as UNESCO World Heritage, passing locks and a swing bridge. A tennis court a few steps from the hotel is reserved for guests, with rackets, balls and water available at reception.
