Five-star hotels in Megève, the Rothschilds' Alpine village
Megève is a Savoyard farming village that became a ski resort after Baroness Noémie de Rothschild decided, in 1916, to develop one in France rather than holiday beside German visitors in St Moritz. Her chalet, by Henry Jacques Le Même, was to resemble the local farms, and luxury hotels in Megève still follow that pairing. Les Fermes de Marie took the same idea into the luxury hotels of France in 1989, building a hamlet with wood from some fifty dismantled alpine farms.

Staying in Megève: village, slopes and history
From farming village to the Rothschilds' resort
Megève sits on a col above the Arve valley in Haute-Savoie, with Demi-Quartier, Combloux, Praz-sur-Arly and Saint-Gervais-les-Bains among its neighbours. For centuries it lived from crops and livestock, and the tourist office still stresses that, unlike resorts created from scratch, Megève remains a village inhabited all year round. INSEE counted 2,893 residents in the commune in 2023.
The change came from a single family. In 1916 Baroness Noémie de Rothschild decided to develop a ski resort in France so that she no longer had to holiday alongside German visitors in St Moritz. By 1919 she had founded the Société Française des Hôtels de Montagne, and the development that followed included a hotel on Mont d'Arbois, opened in 1921, and a golf course.
The look of the resort owes much to the architect Henry Jacques Le Même, who moved to Megève and opened his practice there in 1925. In 1926 the baroness asked him for a chalet that resembled the farms of the area but had a very comfortable interior, and he went on to design more than 200 chalets. In 1933 the Rochebrune cable car opened and, in the tourist office's words, revolutionised access to the slopes.
That pairing of farmhouse architecture and high-society patronage still shapes the luxury hotels in Megève today. The resort even had its screen moment: the opening scenes of the 1963 film Charade, with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, are set here.
Luxury hotels in Megève: village or slopes?
Megève's ski sectors are names you will meet in addresses and on the piste map. Mont d'Arbois is the Rothschild side of the resort. Rochebrune is the sector that received the 1933 cable car. Le Jaillet is the sector on the Portes du Mont-Blanc side, and Côte 2000 and L'Alpette complete the list.
For a five-star stay the first decision is between the village and the lifts outside your door. The village offers what the tourist office describes as cobbled streets, lively squares, traditional chalets and elegant boutiques. The slope sectors trade that for skiing first and the village second.
The resort does not stop at the commune boundary. The Princesse gondola, one of the main ways onto the Megève and Saint-Gervais slopes, stands in the neighbouring commune of Demi-Quartier, which shares Megève's 74120 postcode; this page also lists its five-star hotel. If you drive in, the tourist office lists six underground car parks in Megève (Arly, Rochebrune, Mont d'Arbois, Casino, Village and Office de Tourisme) as well as surface car parks named after the ski sectors, such as Le Jaillet and Côte 2000.
If you are weighing Megève hotels against other resorts in the French Alps, the useful comparison is scale: Megève combines a lived-in village with a lift network that reaches well beyond it, as the ski-area section below shows.
Les Fermes de Marie, a hamlet of rebuilt farms
Les Fermes de Marie is the five-star hotel Hotel5only lists in Megève. It opened in December 1989, created by Jocelyne and Jean-Louis Sibuet with old wood recovered from alpine farms: Jean-Louis dismantled some fifty properties and, the hotel says, restored some 2,000 pieces of furniture in five years. The hotel gives its position as about 350 metres from the centre of the village, and it runs a dedicated shuttle to the ski lifts on request.
The Atout France register records 67 rooms, and the current five-star classification dates from 3 January 2024. Accommodation ranges from Club rooms, some with a terrace or balcony facing the mountains, to separate chalets: Le Chalet du Skieur has three bedrooms, an equipped kitchen, a dining room, a terrace and a sauna, and the Chalet des Fermes de Marie has its own jacuzzi.
Wellness centres on the Pure Altitude Spa, with a pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and treatments based on mountain plants. Le Molitor adds a sauna, a gym and a Nordic bath. Breakfast is included with every room, and half-board (breakfast and dinner, drinks excluded) is offered. The hotel says guests can dine in one of five restaurants, in the hotel and in the village, among them a traditional restaurant and Le Relais des Fermes, its mountain restaurant.
Four Seasons Resort Megève, a Palace on the slopes of Mont d'Arbois
Four Seasons Resort Megève stands at 373 Chemin des Follières, on the slopes of Mont d'Arbois, with ski-in/ski-out access in winter. The Atout France register lists 55 rooms with a five-star classification dated 6 November 2023, and the resort is one of the Palaces on the official list updated on 2 June 2026, which our guide to Palace hotels in France sets out in full.
The Rothschild link to Megève goes back to the 1910s, and in 1921 Baroness Noémie de Rothschild opened the Domaine du Mont d'Arbois, a luxury hotel that boosted the resort's growth. Today the resort is owned by Edmond de Rothschild Heritage and run as a partnership between Four Seasons and the family. It has a 900 m² spa with a heated indoor-outdoor pool, a bistro and a brasserie, the Nikkei restaurant Kaito and a free shuttle to the village. Check the season before booking: as of October 2026 the resort is closed from 6 September to 15 December 2026 and welcomes winter guests from 16 December 2026 to 28 March 2027.
Évasion Mont-Blanc and the Portes du Mont-Blanc
Skiers in Megève choose between two lift passes. The Évasion Mont-Blanc pass covers seven resorts with Megève as its anchor. The lift operators' websites, read in September 2026, give 445 km of pistes: 48 green, 63 blue, 85 red and 34 black runs, served by 110 lifts between 850 and 2,353 metres. Megève's tourist office rounds the size to more than 400 km and describes it as one of the largest ski areas in the French Alps, with wide boulevards for beginners and demanding slopes for experienced skiers.
The Portes du Mont-Blanc is the smaller alternative, which the tourist office calls more human in scale and suited to families. It links Megève's Le Jaillet sector with Combloux and La Giettaz. Both areas offer views of Mont Blanc.
| Area | Resorts on the pass | Published size | Megève sectors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Évasion Mont-Blanc | Megève, Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc, Saint-Nicolas de Véroce, Combloux, La Giettaz, Les Contamines-Montjoie, Hauteluce | 445 km of pistes, 110 lifts, 850 to 2,353 m | Mont d'Arbois, Rochebrune, Côte 2000, L'Alpette |
| Portes du Mont-Blanc | Megève, Combloux, La Giettaz | 66 runs, 10 lifts | Le Jaillet |
Getting to Megève from Geneva, Lyon and Annecy
Most international guests arrive through Geneva and drive in on the A40, leaving the motorway at exit 20 (Sallanches), 12 km from Megève.
The nearest railway station is Sallanches–Combloux–Megève, served by TER and TGV trains from Paris, Lyon, Annecy and Geneva, with Léman Express connections for Geneva and its airport. From the station, shuttles, taxis and ride-hailing cars cover the last stretch, and bus line Y83 runs from Sallanches bus station towards Flumet, serving Megève.
Between 1 November and 31 March, drivers in mountain areas must either fit four winter tyres or carry removable snow devices for at least two drive wheels, a rule in force since 1 November 2021.

The Calvaire, Le Palais and the village calendar
The Calvaire is Megève's great piece of religious heritage: a monumental Way of the Cross built between 1840 and 1878, leading up to the Calvaire plateau past 15 listed chapels. It belongs to the older, pre-ski Megève that the tourist office is keen to show.
Le Palais, the sports and leisure complex designed by the architect Maurice Novarina and opened in 1968, is the answer to a day off the slopes. It is open all year, with an Olympic ice rink measuring 60 by 30 metres and seating 2,700, indoor and outdoor pools, a curling rink, a climbing wall, tennis courts and a spa area. It hosted the men's world curling championship in 1971 and four world junior figure-skating championships between 1976 and 1980.
The calendar runs beyond winter. The tourist office lists Toquicimes, billed as the meeting place for mountain cuisine, for 16 to 18 October 2026, and the Christmas tree lighting for 5 December 2026. In summer it points visitors to hiking, mountain biking and flights from the altiport.
Day trips from a Megève base
Megève works well as a base for the wider Mont Blanc country. Over the Mont d'Arbois, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains adds thermal baths and the Mont-Blanc Tramway, while Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is the place for the Aiguille du Midi and the Mer de Glace. Annecy lies down the Arve valley; for a lakeside five-star stay there, see Annecy-le-Vieux.
For a longer trip that combines Megève with another resort or a city, our guide on how to compare five-star hotels before booking explains what the French classification does and does not tell you. The tourist office is at 70 rue Monseigneur Conseil, in the village.
Frequently asked questions
What luxury hotels are in Megève?
The table on this page lists every hotel the official Atout France register classifies five-star in Megève and in the adjoining commune of Demi-Quartier, which shares Megève's postcode and ski area. Two of them also have Hotel5only profiles with photographs: Les Fermes de Marie in Megève and Magic Megève Bois in Demi-Quartier.
When does the ski season start in Megève?
For the 2026–27 winter the Megève tourist office announced a partial opening on the weekend of 5 and 6 December 2026, a further partial opening from 12 December, and the general opening of the ski areas on 19 December 2026. Dates are published season by season, so later winters will have their own calendar.
Can you ski from Megève to Saint-Gervais?
Yes. The Mont d'Arbois sector belongs to the Megève–Saint-Gervais part of Évasion Mont-Blanc, and from the top of Mont d'Arbois the green Chateluy run leads down to the snow front of the Saint-Gervais resort. That makes it possible to combine a Megève stay with a day on the slopes of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains on skis.
Which airports are closest to Megève?
The tourist office calls Geneva Airport the most convenient, with many international connections. By car, Annecy's regional airport, useful for some domestic flights, is about 1 hour 15 minutes away, Chambéry about 1 hour 30 minutes with seasonal flights mainly in winter, and Lyon-Saint-Exupéry about 2 hours 15 minutes. Megève's own altiport takes light aircraft and helicopters close to the village and the slopes.
