The hotel at a glance.
The Carlton Cannes has faced the sea from La Croisette, the seafront of Cannes on the French Riviera, for more than a century: its monumental neoclassical building with a Belle Époque spirit was completed in 1913. Its story is bound up with cinema, from 1946, when the Cannes Film Festival really took off, to the key scenes of Alfred Hitchcock's 'To Catch a Thief', shot here in 1954. After a two-year makeover, the hotel reopened on 13 March 2023.
Why it stands out
- Belle Époque landmark on La Croisette, classified a Historical Monument in 1989
- Suites with sea views from Port Canto to the Palais des Festivals
- Renovation by Richard Lavelle and Tristan Auer, reopened in 2023
- La Prairie treatments and a 450 m² fitness club at Le C Club
- Carlton Beach Club, born in 1930 as Cannes's first private beach
A Belle Époque hotel with a screen past
The hotel's origins read like a Russian novel. Grand Duke Michael of Russia, who had moved to Cannes in 1909, helped to finance its construction, and the hotel says its name, Carlton, means 'free man' in Scandinavian. The hotelier Henri Ruhl and the architect Charles Dalmas then took over the project. A first part opened on 30 January 1911; a new wing built in 1912 and 1913 doubled the hotel's size and gave it its present form. Legend has it that the domes on its two seaward corners were modelled on the breasts of the courtesan La Belle Otero.
Sport, cinema and politics all pass through its history. On 17 February 1926 the final of the Cannes tournament, remembered as the Match of the Century, was played on the Carlton's central court, and Suzanne Lenglen beat the American Helen Wills 6-3, 8-6. In 1954 Alfred Hitchcock chose the hotel for the key scenes of 'To Catch a Thief' with Grace Kelly and Cary Grant, filming the pair on the hotel's private beach and Grace Kelly, in a strapless bright blue dress, at dinner in the Grand Salon. In the summer of 1983 the hotel and its beach appeared prominently in Elton John's video for 'I'm Still Standing', and in 2011, during the G20 summit, the Carlton welcomed President Barack Obama.
On 29 August 1989 the Carlton was classified as a Historical Monument. The listing protects its façade, roofs and domes, as well as interiors such as the main hall, the Grand Salon and two of its staircases. The renovation completed in 2023 was entrusted to the architect Richard Lavelle, with interiors by Tristan Auer, whose stated aim was to preserve the listed spaces while creating a masterpiece of its own time; according to the hotel, 750 people and 450 companies worked on it.
From the outside little seems to have changed, yet the façades were cleaned, renovated and extended with new wings, and the 'Carlton Hotel' lettering on the front was reproduced exactly as it appeared at the 1913 opening. Inside, exclusive ceramic pieces by a local artisan feature among the room amenities, from the Classic rooms to the Alfred Hitchcock suite.
On the Croisette, by the sea
The address is 58 La Croisette, on the seafront promenade. From the Premium room Sea view, the outlook runs along the shore from Port Canto to the Palais des Festivals, home of the film festival since 1983.
Behind the façade, the grand patio blends stone and greenery, with tall trees, aromatic herbs and colourful flower beds around an infinity pool. As of October 2026, drinks are served by the pool from 10:00 to 17:00 and food from 12:00 to 17:00. For trips beyond Cannes, including winter outings to the mountains of the Alpes-Maritimes, the concierge arranges transfers by chauffeured car, prestige vehicle or private helicopter.
Bow-windows, patios and sea-view suites
The Classic rooms with a city view and with a garden view each measure about 27 m² and have a king-size bed, or twin beds on request. The City view rooms look over Cannes, with a private balcony available as an option from the sixth floor, while the Garden view rooms have what the hotel calls a privileged view of the serene interior patio and an optional private terrace. The Classic room Sea view, designed by Tristan Auer, has the bow-windows that are a Carlton signature.
Premium rooms come in five versions. The Sea view room looks along the shore from Port Canto to the Palais des Festivals, and the Sea view with balcony adds a furnished balcony. The Garden view room faces a peaceful interior patio planted with local flora, while the City view room looks across Cannes and the City view with balcony adds an intimate balcony of its own.
Suites, from 36 to 102 m², pair a bedroom with a living room. The Suite Sea view has three iconic windows facing the stretch from Port Canto to the Palais des Festivals, and the Suite Sea view with balcony has floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto a private balcony. The Suite Partial sea view, from 58 to 102 m², overlooks the city and the Mediterranean and has a private terrace. On the garden side, the Suite Garden view has a living room opening onto the interior garden, a view of the pool and a bathroom with a bathtub, while the Suite Garden view with terrace adds what the hotel calls a charming terrace.
The Iconic suites range from 55 m² to 352 m². Named suites include the 63 m² Alfred Hitchcock suite, with a panoramic view of the Bay of Cannes and the Esterel, and suite 641, a tribute to Suzanne Lenglen set under the east dome, which offers what the hotel describes as one of the most beautiful views over the sea. For families and extended stays, the hotel points to its Residences, of 70 m² to 278 m² with one to four bedrooms, and to connecting rooms, available on request for the Classic rooms and for suites such as the Alfred Hitchcock. All rooms and suites are non-smoking.

Terrace tables, tea and live music
Riviera Restaurant works in a Mediterranean brasserie spirit, with a menu guided by seasonality and proximity: what the hotel describes as market produce and fish fresh off the quay. Guests can sit at the chef's table facing the open kitchen or on the terrace overlooking the Croisette and the sea, for lunch, snacks or dinner from 12:00 to 22:00. A weekday lunch menu, whose dishes change every week, runs Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays and congress periods, and every Friday from 19:00 Riviera Aperitivo & Grill serves sharing plates, then a grilled speciality for two presented and prepared at the table according to the dish.
Breakfast is a buffet at Riviera, served every day from 07:30 without reservation and subject to availability; non-resident guests are welcome only outside congress periods. Those who prefer a slower start can take the à la carte late breakfast at the Camélia Tea Lounge, daily from 10:00 to 12:00.
Rüya, whose name means 'dream' in Turkish, was created by the restaurateur Umut Özkanca. Its seasonal dishes revisit Anatolian classics from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea, and the bar pairs mezes with Turkish-inspired cocktails. By the sea, the Carlton Beach Club restaurant serves what the hotel calls simple, sunny cuisine at lunch, facing the bay of Cannes; in October 2026 it opened from Wednesday to Sunday, 12:00 to 16:00, with the bar serving until 18:00.
Bar 58, open from 11:00 to midnight, centres on a Raku ceramic mosaic counter made by a local craftswoman. The menu lists classics, house signature cocktails and alcohol-free creations. Each week brings live music: bossa nova on Thursdays from 19:00 to 22:30, soul on Fridays from 19:00 to 23:00 and jazz on Saturdays from 19:00 to 22:30.
The Camélia Tea Lounge pairs its teas with sweets from the pastry chefs and welcomes guests without reservation, subject to availability. Drinks are served from 10:00 to 22:00 and snacks from 12:00 to 22:00. Afternoon tea, with savoury and sweet creations, runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 15:00 to 18:00; between 16:00 and 18:30 a harpist plays on Fridays and Saturdays and a violinist on Sundays.
Le C Club for body and mind
Le C Club Fitness & Spa is the hotel's centre for body and mind. Its fitness area covers 450 m² of premium equipment and was conceived by Stéphane Demouy around his Intelligent Sport-Health concept, with each programme tailored to the client's age, fitness level and goals.
The spa works with the Swiss brand La Prairie and offers a signature 90-minute facial designed for the Carlton. Massages range from relaxing and deep-tissue to hot stone, maternity and maderotherapy treatments, and couples can book the Duo Cabin, a double treatment room with its own steam room. Opening hours follow the seasons: 09:00 to 20:00 daily from April to September, and 10:00 to 19:00 from October to March.
A historic beach, excursions and a kids' club
The Carlton Beach Club has its own place in the town's history. At a time when the hotels of Cannes closed for the summer, the Carlton decided in 1928 to open in the warm season for the first time; in 1930 it obtained from the town the concession of a plot in front of the hotel, and the Carlton Beach Club became the first private beach in Cannes. In July and August, the hotel's summer programme includes water sports and beachside experiences.
Beyond the seafront, the hotel offers a series of excursions and suggests outings close at hand: Le Suquet, the old fishing village of Roman origin with its cobbled streets, the covered Forville Market and the Lérins Islands in the bay. Further afield, its list reaches the perfume town of Grasse.
Families have a kids' club with dedicated supervision and programmes adapted by age. Children explore the behind-the-scenes world of the hotel's professions and take part in creative workshops, mocktail making and activities inspired by Le C Club Fitness. The Kids Club runs at Easter on the Sunday and Monday, with daily activities through July and August, and over the festive season during the school holidays. Children's menus and room service are available, and families in a Residence can take their meals there.
