Hôtel Juana faces the pine forest in Juan-les-Pins on the French Riviera, in a building that the architect Georges Dikansky built for Alexandre Barache in 1931. Since the 1960s it has played a central role in welcoming the artists of the Jazz à Juan Festival, and its legend includes Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.

Why it stands out

  • A 1931 house by Georges Dikansky, facing the pine forest
  • Central to welcoming Jazz à Juan Festival artists since the 1960s
  • Prestige Sea rooms overlook the Lérins Islands, the Estérel and the Mediterranean
  • Exclusive Terrace rooms open onto a 20 m² private terrace
  • Heated outdoor pool, sauna and fitness studio, plus access to Belles Rives beach

A 1931 house with a jazz pedigree

Alexandre Barache commissioned the hotel in 1931, inspired, as the hotel tells it, by the growing appeal of Juan-les-Pins, and he gave the project to Georges Dikansky, whom it calls a renowned French Riviera architect. Dikansky's many iconic buildings include several now listed as historic monuments. Distinguished guests soon followed, among them the Aga Khan III, Edward VIII and Winston Churchill.

In the 1960s the Juana became, in the hotel's words, an emblematic gathering place for artists and jazz icons, and it has played a central part in welcoming Jazz à Juan performers ever since. Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Ray Charles and Ella Fitzgerald were regular guests who sometimes stayed up late into the night to jam at the bar. In 1984, under Alain Ducasse, the house became a landmark for fine dining, and in 2006 it joined the Belles Rives Group, led by Marianne Estène-Chauvin.

The hotel describes the style of its rooms and suites as a sun-drenched elegance in which Art Deco meets contemporary design, with subtle touches inspired by the 1950s. Since 2018, the Deluxe suite collection has included a signature suite, the Suite du Peintre, which draws on Pablo Picasso and pays homage to the painter's time in Antibes; it is available on request.

Opposite the pines of Juan-les-Pins

The hotel stands at 19 Avenue George Gallice, directly opposite the pine forest, and the train station is one kilometre away. For those flying in, Cannes Mandelieu Airport is 35 km off, about 25 minutes away, and Nice Côte d'Azur Airport 45 km, about 35 minutes; Marseille Airport is 150 km away, around 1 hour 15 minutes.

For getting about, the concierge can arrange vehicle, bicycle and scooter rentals as well as boat rentals.

Pine forest, city or sea: choosing a view

The Classic, Exclusive Pinède, Exclusive Terrace and Prestige Sea rooms all measure between 24 and 28 m², so the choice among them comes down to view, floor and outdoor space. Classic rooms, for one or two guests and 24 to 26 m², are on the first to fifth floors and have city views; each has a shower and a separate bath, and the equipment list includes Asprey toiletries and a turndown service. Exclusive Pinède rooms, 24 to 28 m² on the first to third floors, are decorated in a modern Art Deco style and have balconies with unobstructed views of the pine trees; a third person can be accommodated on request.

Exclusive Terrace rooms, 24 to 28 m² for two, are on the first floor facing the pines. Spacious and full of light, they open onto a private terrace of 20 m² with sun loungers and garden furniture. Prestige Sea rooms, 24 to 26 m² for two on the fourth and fifth floors, are dressed in precious wood; all have balconies and natural light, and they look over the bay of Juan-les-Pins towards the Lérins Islands, the Estérel and the Mediterranean.

The Deluxe suites, 60 m² for two on the third and fifth floors, overlook the bay of Juan-les-Pins and are designed as true apartments, with a separate living room and bedroom and a double balcony. Their bathrooms have double basins, showers and separate whirlpool baths, and the equipment list includes Asprey toiletries, a Nespresso machine and a Bluetooth speaker.

Two larger categories, both of 50 m², sleep three or four. Family rooms, for three guests on the second floor, have city views; the hotel says they are designed for family stays and combine space and comfort. The Family Pavilion, for four, stands away from the main building in a setting the hotel describes as conducive to calm and privacy. It has two separate bedrooms, each with its own private entrance off a shared landing, so that each guest keeps a measure of independence while sharing the same space.
