Staying at Château La Coste in Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade
Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade, between the Trévaresse and the Durance
Le Puy, as it is often called, lies in the Bouches-du-Rhône on the border with the Vaucluse, 15 km north of central Aix by the N96 and then the D561. It sits between the ridges of the Trévaresse and the Durance, the river that separates the two departments, with Pertuis and the southern Luberon on the far bank. Vines cover the hills and arable crops the plain, and the commune had 5,935 inhabitants in 2023.
The walk up to the Sainte-Réparade chapel, built in the 10th or 11th century, ends with panoramic views over the Durance plain, the Luberon and the Alpilles, and a procession climbs to it on the saint's feast day, 8 October. On the hill of La Quille stand the ruins of a fortress destroyed in 1612 on the orders of the Parliament of Provence. The commune's wine estates include Château de Fonscolombe, a listed historic monument that is also a five-star hotel, Château La Coste, Château Paradis and Domaine Les Bastides.
Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence and the La Coste wines
The vines belong to the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence, an AOC since a decree of 24 December 1985. It covers 47 communes of the Bouches-du-Rhône and two of the Var, from the Durance to the Mediterranean, and it is above all a rosé appellation, with about 85% of production. Across most of Provence, the harvest comes in early in September.
Château La Coste makes organic Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence and IGP Méditerranée wines in red, white and rosé, plus a traditional-method sparkling wine, La Bulle de La Coste. Its reds draw on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsaut, Grenache Noir and Syrah, its whites on Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Vermentino, Sauvignon Blanc and Ugni Blanc. The whole vineyard has been organic since 2013 and certified biodynamic by Demeter since the 2022 harvest.
Jean Nouvel designed the winery, officially opened for the 2008 harvest, with vats some 17 metres underground. Cellar tours run every day, in French at 11.30 am and in English at 2 pm, and end with a tasting of six wines; the wine shop also offers three wines to taste free of charge, without booking.
The Art and Architecture Walk at Château La Coste
The estate's Palladian country house dates from 1682. In 2004 its owner, the Irish property developer Paddy McKillen, set out to make it a centre for contemporary art, giving invited artists and architects free rein to choose a site; the estate opened to the public in 2011, the year Tadao Ando's entrance gate, Art Centre and chapel were completed.
The walk is a 4 km outdoor circuit through woods, olive groves and vines, past more than 40 works, mainly sculptures; the estate suggests two to three hours and a start before 3 pm. Highlights include Louise Bourgeois's Crouching Spider, Alexander Calder's Small Crinkly, the first work the estate acquired, Frank Gehry's music pavilion, first shown at the Serpentine Gallery in 2007, Richard Serra's AIX, Sean Scully's Wall of Light Cubed and Renzo Piano's pavilion, dug 6 metres into the vineyard.
The estate opens daily from 10 am to 7 pm, until 8 pm in summer, and closes only on 25 December. Walk tickets are sold on site, while the daily guided tours in French and English are best booked. Six restaurants serve the estate, among them the Tadao Ando restaurant and Francis Mallmann's Argentinian restaurant, and Auberge La Coste offers rooms around a Provençal square.
Villa La Coste, the Palace on the hill
Villa La Coste sits high on the estate's hillside. The Atout France register lists it at 2750 Route de la Cride with 28 rooms and a five-star classification dated 5 April 2024, while the hotel itself describes 31 Villa Suites in five categories. It is one of nine Palaces in the Côte d'Azur and South-East group of the official list updated on 2 June 2026, alongside Airelles Gordes, La Bastide in Gordes; our guide to Palace hotels in France explains the distinction.
Every suite opens onto a private terrace over the Luberon valley and the vineyard. A Villa Suite measures about 111 square metres including its terrace, and the Villa Suites with a Pool add a private heated pool. A stay includes a Château La Coste wine tasting and an art and architecture tour, and the hotel has a 24-hour concierge, a library, a gym, a yoga and meditation room and a spa with hammams and a mineral cocoon.
Florent Pietravalle has led Louison, the gastronomic restaurant, since 6 March 2026; Gault&Millau notes that he made his name as chef of La Mirande in Avignon. La Galerie, on the second floor, serves from breakfast to dinner every day, Les Jardins opens for lunch from May to September, and the bar opens daily from 11 am.

Aix-en-Provence, the Luberon and day trips
Aix-en-Provence is about 20 minutes away, close enough for an evening in town; our guide to Aix-en-Provence covers the Cours Mirabeau, the Cézanne sites and the city's five-star bastides. The city's summer Festival d'Aix-en-Provence is announced for 1 to 20 July 2027.
Villa La Coste places the estate halfway between Aix and the Luberon Regional Natural Park, and its concierge suggests trips to the villages of the Luberon, boat outings to the coves of Cassis and hot-air balloon flights over the lavender fields. Gordes, one of the most visited villages of the Luberon park, has a Palace of its own, and our guides to Avignon and Arles cover two more stops in Provence.
Getting to Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade
The estate gives Aix-en-Provence TGV station as roughly 30 minutes by car, with direct trains from Paris, Lyon and Nice; the train from Paris takes about three hours. Marseille Provence Airport is roughly 45 minutes away, Nice Côte d'Azur Airport about 90 and Marseille's TGV station about an hour.
From Marseille Provence Airport, drivers are told to take the D20 and then the D9 past Aix-en-Provence TGV station, rather than the A7 motorway, and then the D14 north towards Puyricard; drivers heading south on the A51 take exit 15 for Pertuis, about 15 minutes from the estate. Private jets can land at Aix Les Milles, Marseille Provence or Avignon, the estate has its own helipad, and Villa La Coste has a covered private car park.

When to go: festival, harvest and summer rules
The estate is open all year. Summer brings Villa La Coste's pool, open daily from 10 am to 8 pm, lunches at Les Jardins and the Festival d'Aix in July; early September is harvest time across most of Provence; and on 8 October Le Puy holds its procession to the Sainte-Réparade chapel.
Walkers should know the summer rules. From 1 June to 30 September, a prefectoral order regulates access to the forested massifs of the Bouches-du-Rhône, and the map for the next day is published after 6 pm, so a hike in the hills around Aix is best confirmed the evening before.
