On Rue du Louvre in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, a few blocks up from the Louvre museum, Madame Rêve occupies the former Louvre Post Office, a grand Haussmannian edifice that closed in 2015. The building was restored under founder and art director Laurent Taïeb, with designer Andrée Putman. At the top, ROOF spreads a 1,000 m² hanging garden of cherry trees, with a 360-degree view of Notre-Dame, Beaubourg, the Eiffel Tower and Sacré-Cœur.

Why it stands out

  • A restored Haussmannian post office, reworked with designer Andrée Putman
  • ROOF: a 1,000 m² rooftop garden of cherry trees with 360-degree views
  • Restaurant Madame Rêve: contemporary French cuisine by Michelin-starred Chef Tom Meyer
  • More than half the rooms have balconies or terraces
  • A 130 m² Penthouse with wraparound terrace and private sauna

A Haussmannian post office remade

The hotel is housed in the emblematic Poste du Louvre building, also known as the Grande Poste de Paris, which the MICHELIN Guide counts among the great landmarks of the 1st arrondissement. The hotel describes itself as a place of art, emotion and inspiration shaped by the vision of its founder, Laurent Taïeb. The guide, which has awarded it One MICHELIN Key, finds that the thorough renovation brought out the glamorous side of this 19th-century structure, and calls the lobby level a postmodern period piece evoking the romance of travel in a bygone era.

Upstairs, the hotel treats each room and suite as an urban cocoon combining contemporary elegance with Parisian warmth, in a setting inspired by Art Nouveau: walnut panelling, oak floors, velvet curtains, bespoke zelliges and hand-crafted mosaics, with carefully selected furniture, tailor-made fabrics and precious woods. Artworks by Olivier Masmonteil and Inès Longevial decorate the hotel's spaces.

The hotel also follows an eco-responsible approach, with demanding environmental labels. Solar panels produce part of the hot water, the number of bathtubs has been reduced, the building has been optimised thermally and acoustically, and sustainable materials are used.

Minutes on foot from Saint-Eustache and the Louvre

Rue du Louvre sits in what the hotel calls one of the most vibrant neighbourhoods in Paris, and several of the city's landmarks are a short walk away. The Bourse de Commerce is three minutes away, Saint-Eustache Church five and the Garden of the Palais-Royal seven. La Samaritaine is a ten-minute stroll, the Louvre Museum twelve and the Tuileries Garden thirteen, while the Centre Pompidou lies fifteen minutes away.

Longer walks reach further. Place Vendôme is 18 minutes on foot, Saint-Germain-des-Prés 21 and the Garnier Opera 24. Avenue Montaigne takes 41 minutes and the Eiffel Tower 54, although the tower is also part of the hotel's panoramic views over Paris, which take in Montmartre as well, and some rooms look out at it.

Ateliers, terraces and views of the Eiffel Tower

Views set the categories apart here. Four of them form what the hotel calls its Eiffel Tower view rooms and suites, each with a view of the tower: the Eiffel Tower view versions of the Deluxe Atelier and the Executive Terrace, the Junior Suite Deluxe Atelier and the two-bedroom Suite Eiffel Tower. Outdoor space is common too: the hotel counts 54 balconies, and more than half of the rooms have balconies or terraces. The Deluxe Terrace (Exceptional view), at 26 m², has a balcony over the historical landmarks and bronzed mosaic tiles in the bathroom. Both Deluxe Atelier categories take their architecture from the spirit of the Parisian atelier: the Deluxe Atelier (Exceptional view), at 29 m², looks towards historical monuments, while the Deluxe Atelier (Eiffel Tower view), at 34 m², frames the tower at sunset and dusk; both have bronzed mosaic bathrooms.

The Executive Terrace rooms add a terrace and switch to golden mosaic tiles: 29 m² facing the Eiffel Tower, or 31 m² in the Exceptional view version. The Junior Suite Atelier (Exceptional view), at 36 m², faces emblematic monuments at dawn, with golden brown mosaics, and the Junior Suite Deluxe Atelier, at 40 m², looks to the Eiffel Tower at sunset and dusk.

Families and friends travelling together can consider the 70 m² Suite Eiffel Tower, with two bedrooms, two king-size beds and a balcony; its bathroom, with bathtub, shower and double sink, has a 180-degree view of Paris and the Eiffel Tower. The 55 m² Suite Madame Rêve Terrace has a separate living room, a terrace and a view of Saint-Eustache Church, plus a bathroom with bathtub, shower and double sink.

The Penthouse occupies the top floor across 130 m², designed like a Parisian apartment suspended above the capital. It has a private entrance, a light-filled wraparound terrace and a 180-degree view of the Centre Pompidou, Saint-Eustache and the Panthéon, with handcrafted walnut woodwork and a collection of art objects. The living room has a 97-inch OLED 4K TV with a Devialet sound system; the bedroom, a 200 x 200 cm king-size bed and velvet curtains; the bathroom, under a glass roof, a bathtub, shower, double washbasin and city view. There is a fully equipped kitchen and a private two-person sauna, the space is soundproofed, and a back door leads directly to La Plume, so guests can invite a chef or extend a meal in privacy. Penthouse guests receive complimentary private airport transfers, priority access to ROOF and priority reservations at La Plume.

Tom Meyer's cuisine, La Plume and ROOF

Restaurant Madame Rêve, the hotel's all-day restaurant, is led by Michelin-starred Chef Tom Meyer with Executive Chef Benjamin Six. The menu takes a contemporary line on French cuisine, setting graphic plates, bold flavours and unexpected combinations beside timeless classics drawn from the French brasserie. It is open every day from 07:00 to 23:00, for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a brunch on Sundays. For a more private meal, the Boudoir de Madame Rêve, inspired by 19th-century Parisian salons, with carved woodwork, tapestries and rich colours, suits a dinner for two, a few friends or a special occasion, and a private terrace opens it to the city.

La Plume, led by chef Benjamin Six, is the hotel's panoramic restaurant on the 3rd floor, blending local and international flavours in a space overlooking Saint-Eustache Church, and it is open to the public as well as to hotel guests. The 300 m² room opens onto a hanging garden, looks out over the Parisian sky and is finished in Calacatta Oro marble, Edelman leather and noble woods. It has a tree-lined terrace and views of Saint-Eustache and the Eiffel Tower, and in the warmer months a leafy patio is set for intimate summer dinners, away from the city's bustle.

ROOF, which the hotel calls its emblematic rooftop, is a 1,000 m² landscaped roof whose hanging garden is planted with cherry trees, light foliage and decorative trees. Its 360-degree panorama takes in Notre-Dame, Sacré-Cœur, the Bourse de Commerce and the Eiffel Tower. Signature cocktails and refined finger food are served in a lush, covered and heated patio. By day ROOF is reserved for hotel guests; in the evening it opens to all, for cocktails as the sun sets over the city.

A wellness area with a sauna overlooking Paris

The 150 m² wellness area is decorated with pictures paying tribute to sport. It includes two treatment rooms, a fitness room equipped with the latest technology and a sauna in light-coloured woods overlooking the streets of Paris.
