How to check a hotel's location and transport before booking

Confirm the exact property and its entrance

Copy the full street address from the hotel's official website and compare it with the booking offer: street, postcode, town and hotel name. This matters most when a group runs several addresses in the same city, or when a hotel's name resembles another's. Atout France's register of classified accommodation lists each hotel under its official name and address, which helps you confirm that you have the intended property.

Then find the guest entrance on a map. Large estates and historic buildings sometimes have separate entrances for cars, pedestrians and deliveries, and some spread their rooms across several buildings. At Château de La Gaude near Aix-en-Provence, some suites and rooms lie up to 800 metres from reception. Ask the hotel which entrance to use on foot, by car or with reduced mobility, and save the address and phone number separately from the map link.

From the airport or station to your hotel

Start every route at the exact terminal, station or coach stop on your travel booking, not at the city centre. A high-speed train's running time says nothing about the transfer at either end: add the time to leave the station or airport, wait for a connection and reach the hotel door with your luggage.

Hotels often publish these distances themselves, and they are worth reading closely. La Villa Saint Ange in Aix-en-Provence gives the Aix-en-Provence TGV station as 15 minutes away and Marseille Provence Airport as 30 minutes by car. The Renaissance Aix-en-Provence, 25 km from Marseille Provence Airport, states that it runs no airport shuttle, so travellers need to arrange their own transfer.

Public transport links change more often than hotel pages, so check them with the operator. In Paris, the Roissybus coach stopped running in February 2026, and airport journeys by metro, RER or Orlyval need a specific airport ticket rather than a standard one. In Aix-en-Provence, the TGV station lies about 15 km outside the city centre. If the hotel offers a transfer, confirm the pick-up point, the price and how to reach the driver if your arrival is delayed.

Check routes at the times you will travel

Use the official journey planner of the local transport network for the date and time you need, including the return after a late dinner or performance. Look at the number of changes and walking sections rather than only at the total duration, and compare routes to the two or three places that matter most to your stay.

In Paris and the surrounding region, the Île-de-France Mobilités app and website plan journeys across the network, and the app's traffic section lets you follow a line and receive alerts about disruption and planned works. Other networks provide equivalents; check them again shortly before departure. If an important appointment depends on a particular connection, save a workable alternative.

Examine the last few hundred metres

Zoom in on the walk between the station exit or taxi drop-off and the hotel entrance. Look for stairs, slopes, cobbles and busy crossings. A short distance on a map does not prove that a route suits a suitcase, a pushchair or your personal mobility needs.

If step-free travel is essential, check the operator's accessibility information for every stage of the journey. The Île-de-France Mobilités journey planner, for example, has an option to find routes suited to wheelchair users and shows whether station lifts are available. Then ask the hotel about its entrance and the route inside the building to your room. Some hotels describe adapted rooms precisely: at Hôtel Château d'Audrieu in Normandy, some ground-floor rooms are adapted for reduced mobility, including a Tradition room with an Italian shower.

If you drive: parking, access and charging

For a road trip, the arrival questions change. Confirm whether the hotel has its own car park or relies on public parking nearby, whether spaces must be reserved and whether valet parking is offered. At five stars, the official classification grid requires valet parking when a hotel has no secure private car park, while country estates often have their own grounds. Hôtel La Réserve outside Albi, for example, offers free closed parking and a paid garage that can be reserved, and has two electric car charging stations.

Parking capacity can be limited even at large properties: Château de La Gaude lists four outdoor spaces and one covered space. If you drive an electric car, ask how many charging points there are and whether they can be booked.

Driving into Paris has its own rule. The Greater Paris low-emission zone covers the area inside the A86 ring road and, on weekdays from 8am to 8pm, excludes cars rated Crit'Air 3, 4, 5 or unclassified. A Crit'Air sticker is compulsory, and certificat-air.gouv.fr is the only official site that issues it, including for cars registered abroad. At the time of writing, checks are informative and no fines are applied until the end of 2026; confirm the rules before you travel.

Mountain and coastal addresses need extra checks

Ski resorts and coastal villages reward careful planning, because the last stage of the journey is usually by road. Mountain hotels can be a long way from the nearest railway station, as the table below shows for Hôtel Annapurna in Courchevel 1850 and Hôtel Daria I Nor in Alpe d'Huez. In winter, allow for mountain roads, snow equipment and the time needed to reach the resort, and ask the hotel how guests usually arrive.

By the sea, check how you will reach the beach, the old town or the restaurants you have in mind. Test the address against an ordinary day

Imagine a typical day of your stay: leaving for breakfast or a first appointment, coming back to change, going out again for dinner. Work out which journeys repeat. An address that is perfect for one spectacular outing may add an hour of travel to every other day.

Be honest about how you like to move around. Some travellers happily walk thirty minutes each way; others prefer a taxi to the door. In a resort, ask how guests reach the slopes, the beach or the village: Villa Mazarin is a practical base for exploring the Camargue and Provence by car, while a ski hotel with direct access to the slopes changes the rhythm of a winter day. Describe your needs precisely rather than relying on the word nearby.

Keep a short arrival plan with your booking

Save the address, the entrance instructions, your intended route, an alternative and the hotel's phone number in one place, available offline. Compare the hotel's check-in arrangements with your travel times and tell the property about a late arrival; the DGCCRF, France's consumer protection authority, advises travellers to check a hotel's arrival conditions and to warn it of any delay.
